Day 27: Cacabelos to Las Herrerías (Bob)
We knew today was going to be a long walk of 19 miles, so we started early and headed out in the dark. For the first time in a few days, we caught a decent sunrise.
The hike towards Villafranca included a long walk along a highway followed by beautiful walk back up towards the mountains.
Then we got to Villafranca, which is one of those gorgeous mountain villages that makes you feel like you stepped into a movie.
Villafranca has a church with a door called Puerta del Perdón: Door of Forgiveness. If you get too injured or ill to finish the Camino, you can enter the door to be forgiven for your physical weaknesses. The bad news is that forgiveness is available only during Jubilee years (every 25 years). The next one is in 2025.
The rest of the day had pleasant scenery somewhat marred by walking next to a highway most of the time. The highlight was eating lunch at a cafe that specializes in gluten-free food and beer, so Wendy was elated for the second day in a row.
After walking from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Wendy’s knees were fine and my feet were only a little sore. It’s great to be able to walk long distances without too much pain.
Here’s where we ended up.
Tomorrow we climb a mountain first thing in the morning. Can’t wait.
