Day 23: San Martín to Astorga (Bob)

We were under the impression that today was going to be a charmless slog alongside a highway, like the trek out of León. Not so!

Well, it started out that way, but after a couple miles the path veered inland towards a gorgeous little village. We ate breakfast at a cafe near a church facade topped by a stork’s nest. We see these nests all the time at the tops of cathedrals and towers, but this is the first time we’ve seen a stork in her perch.

After breakfast, we walked through the rest of the village. I love places like this in Europe.

After that we hiked over a couple mesetas and passed through a few other quaint towns, and then we got to see Astorga in the distance as we strolled towards it.

Another great day. I’m going to miss this place.
