Day 21: Mansilla to León (Bob)
It was supposed to rain all day long. As soon as we stepped out of the albergue, it was raining, and we didn’t expect anything to change when we stopped in a cafe (called a bar/restaurant here). Then a miracle happened. A few minutes after we left the cafe, we realized that the other person hadn’t paid, which means we accidentally dined and dashed. We turned around, walked back, and paid the bill. It didn’t rain a drop the rest of the day. You’re welcome, fellow peregrinos.
When we got into León, we did laundry in a laundromat and ran a few other big city errands, like buying gluten-free food for Wendy. Once we got situated, we walked around the old town. León is an amazing city. Here’s the wall that surrounded old León.
And here’s the amazing cathedral.
Wendy and I took a friend, Richard, from Germany out for dinner to celebrate the end of his Camino. He told us that the German guidebook says the León cathedral is the most beautiful in Spain. Unfortunately, we didn’t make the time to go inside, or I could have formed an ill-formed opinion.
My favorite thing to do in León was wander through the streets looking for the most interesting plazas.
We interacted with our first beggar. She wanted spare coins, but I didn’t give her my spare coins. Later that night, I left my pilgrim hat in a tapas bar, gone forever, and then it rained the next morning when it wasn’t supposed to. Sorry about that, fellow peregrinos.
