Day 15: Hornillos to Castrojeriz (Bob)
At the albergue dinner last night, which featured a delicious paella served from one of those huge pots, we were discussing how to handle today’s weather. The forecast, severe, warned of danger to life and property due to 100km/hr winds. We couldn’t avoid the wind, but leaving early would help us avoid the heaviest rain. At least that’s what most of the meteorologists at the dinner table decided.
The first part of the walk in the dark was pleasant. The wind was strong but sideways, with only a little rain. We chatted with yet another Irish fellow named John for the first half of the walk, which ended with a descent into a town at the bottom of a hollow. Back east, the Spanish towns are on tops of hills, but here in the high plains, they’re low down.
After yet another fulfilling breakfast, we kept moving to stay ahead of the more terrible weather. One of the highlights was the ruins of an old monastery.
As we approached the town we were staying in, the wind started making it difficult to walk straight. I have a video of Wendy getting blown around, but it’s shaky since I was blown around
We finally made it. Here’s a view from our room:
Both our lives and property are safe and sound.
