Day 11: Santo Domingo to Belorado (Bob)
We had our own room at the monastery/nunnery last night, so departure was easy. We both woke up a little before 6:00 am and started getting ready. Once we added tape to our legs and took care of indelicaciosos hiejenicos, we left in the dark. After winding our way out of town, I kept my eyes open for good sunrise photos.
Today’s 13-mile walk included several small towns, usually at the top of a hill centered by an old medieval church. We stopped at the first town and ate breakfast—cafe con leche, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a sandwich or pastry. I really look forward to this type of breakfast every morning.
During the day, we chat with the regulars, including 4 people who started the same day in the same place as us.
In the town before our destination, we stopped at a tavern for a small lunch. Dinner is the big meal for pilgrims.
First course: salad for me and beans for Wendy.
Second course: pork cheeks for me and grilled chicken for Wendy.
Third course: ice cream, homemade cheesecake, and lemon mousse.
Plus wine and coffee.
Next up—try to get a good night’s sleep in the top bunk in a room full of snorers and farters.
